Making a Memorable Experience - Trade Up Your Trade Show Booth

Let’s face it, we’ve all seen them. Trade show and job fair booths/displays that don’t quite cut the mustard. Whether they are boring, un-noticeable, or just poorly designed; the end result is something less than desirable.

Believe it or not, it takes almost as much effort to design and produce a bad display as it does an effective one. Please remember also, that just because a booth has all the bells and whistles does not mean it is effective. For a display or booth to be effective, it must draw in the audience and be memorable.

You are probably asking yourself “can I do this myself?” The simple answer is “yes”. This guide is packed with information on how to make your booth stand out from the crowd. Use it to help make your booth more memorable as we’ll show you how all the little details can help leave a positive lasting impression.

Let’s get started.

What is your message?

“What do you mean, what is your message?” This may seem like an odd question to ask.  However, when planning your booth you need to determine what you are trying to convey. Is your company message progressive and innovative? Or is the message one of efficiency and precision? Is your company more technological or labor focused? The answers to these questions can go a long way to building a memorable booth.

As an example, let’s say your company is a technology-focused company. In this case you may want to go with cool colors, clean design, with small areas of design POP. Make technology the focal point using interactive displays, videos showcasing your technology, and staff the booth with at least one product expert or engineer to answer specific technology-focused questions.

Another example would be a staffing company. In this example your design will want to be more warm and inviting. The booth should focus less around the “wow” and more about people. Pictures of happy workers at actual client locations, printed and or video testimony from the workers and clients, and booth staff that are personable and comfortable are all elements that communicate the benefits of this staffing company.

As you can see by these two VERY different examples, the design of a booth is VITAL in communicating your message, and making your booth memorable.

What do you leave behind?

An almost equally important aspect of having a memorable booth is what is left with the audience. Of course, you want them to have memories of how cool, warm, impressive, or fantastic your booth was. But just how do you reinforce that memory and message? The tried and true answer is with promotional items. Now I know what you may be thinking, “Does he mean Trinkets and Trash?” No, I don’t mean trinkets and trash. Trinkets have no value and trash is thrown away. These items will not effectively reinforce your message.

Let’s use the technology company from our previous example to help illustrate how the right promotional product can really “drive the point home.” Instead of a pen, note pad, or generic stress ball, you may want to focus on something different. Good suggestions are inexpensive USB drives, portable power banks, or cell phone accessories. If your company has a new technology that can be better explained with video, why not create a virtual reality presentation? You can invite folks into your booth to “experience” your product, and give away VR glasses (yes, they make inexpensive versions of these). Now tell me that wouldn’t be memorable!

Conversely, if you were planning a recruiting trip, you would have a very different message to convey. You typically would want an item to be memorable, but also convey that your company has appeal to your prospective employees. Great items would include fun drinkware, a game or puzzle (something they want to hold in their hands for an extended period), or a planner/journal (something they will use for interview notes).
